This format is the ancestor of today’s community card games, and was popular in the early years of the US Civil War.

Despite the popularity of poker, it is still unclear exactly where the game originated. One popular theory suggests that the game may have originated from a Persian game known as As-Nas, although recent scholarship disputes this hypothesis. An earlier game, Primero, is said to have influenced the development of poker, but it is not clear if the origins of poker actually lie in any of these games.

Some other types of poker games include split-pot, which is similar to stud, but with less card play. These types of games have also been referred to as the lowball game.

Finally, there are pot-limit, or limit, games. These are often referred to as the national card game of the United States. Usually, the maximum bet is imposed on raises and antes. Although it is possible to win the main pot without raising or bettying, most players prefer to bet and bluff their way to victory.
